Sæbø Makes A Spectacular Postcard

The view looking out over the fjord is simply outstanding.

We sailed down the Hjørundfjord to Sæbø, nestled in an idyllic bay. Sæbø is an important ferry hub, but it’s also a tiny, warm and welcoming town, with floating saunas you can rent online. Of course, the locals follow-up by hopping into the ocean for a dip, regardless of the time of year!

There are a handful of small shops, beautiful hiking trails, and a historic church. There’s even an assisted living facility that has authentic Norwegian cabins for some of the more independent residents.

I took in the most wonderful concert at the church. It was well attended and so worth it. Two gifted musicians performed authentic Norwegian music on piano, Hardanger fiddle, and accordion. These happen to be some of my favorite instruments, which made the experience even more special. The young man was a professional whistler who could use his skills to harmonize with the young woman on the fiddle or even warble like a bird. His counterpart had a strong, beautiful voice that carried wonderfully as she sang a song about a milkmaid calling her cows. I’ll definitely be sharing some of the videos I took with my music-aficionado friends and family. (Sorry, no pictures of the musicians—people’s heads were in the way.)
