I hopped on a full-day bus tour from Reykjavik for a change of scenery (plus, I think I’ve seen just about everything there is to see in the city). I went on the popular Golden Circle Tour that visits some of Iceland’s most stunning sights, including Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, and the Kerið volcanic crater.

As we headed out of the city, I noticed an incredible variety of landscapes—from moss-covered lava fields and glacier-topped mountains to small hills forested with trees, along with massive chasms and rifts. Plumes of steam rose from various spots across the countryside, a reminder of Iceland’s ubiquitous geothermal activity.

Even being October, the parking lots at every attraction were packed, so I was especially glad to be on a bus. I’m definitely grateful that I got to see these incredible natural wonders, but the crowds were crazy—pretty much like every touristy place in the world these days. I’m always open to suggestions for future travel ideas that are more off the beaten path!
